A Basic Pattern Set is the sheath outfit that fits the body measurements perfectly. There are many different words that are used to describe this basic pattern. A few of the other commonly heard words are Sloper, Block, and foundation pattern.

The pattern-making process starts with taking measurements of the body to create the Basic Pattern Set. This pattern is commonly drafted on paper, cloth, or in an Adobe Illustrator artboard. The Basic pattern set is drafted without seam allowances. It is important to know exactly how and where the pattern will need to be altered to perfectly fit the body it is being fit onto.

When I create my first mock-up of the sloper I like to add extra seam allowance. This helps if the garment needs to let out there is the fabric to do so. Once the fitting is started fabric can always be cut-away. Adding fabric is much harder to do!!!

What to do with this Basic Pattern Set

Now that the Pattern is complete it becomes the foundation to create other patterns through flat patterning. Flat patterning is when the pattern is completely drafted on a flat surface using the measurements from the body and tools such as rulers, and french curves. It is possible to completely flat pattern an entirely new garment from the basic pattern.

Alternatively, you can drape pieces of clothing directly onto a dress form but that is a different process!!!
