Digital apparel patterning is something I always knew that I would be interested in because I love the technology aspect. Once I started patterning on the computer I really figured out how useful and versatile digital patterning could be.

Where do you even start?

There are so many different platforms and program how can you really ever choose which platform you should begin digitally patterning. The answer will be different for everyone. Comparing the program’s cost, user-friendly, system requirements, and many other factors will help you decide where you can start your own learning in digital apparel patterning.

In graduate school, I was lucky enough, to begin with, the Optitex Pattering Software. I loved learning all the key commands and shortcuts to make patterning faster and quicker. Then moving on to actually seeing your pattern become a garment on the screen was so cool.

However, I knew I would not be able to continue with this software due to financial reasons. I began my research into what programs I would like to try out next.

Adobe Illustrator for Apparel Patterning

When someone first asked if I knew how to patterning in adobe illustrator I thought they were crazy for asking. I always had known that system for drawing or photoshop or PDF editing. But I knew that I could easily afford the platform so I began to look into how to apparel pattern in illustrator.

There was a bit of a learning curve to figure out the best way to flat pattern on an artboard. However, with many weeks of trial and error, I was able to figure out how to flat pattern, print out, and make a large variety of pieces.

I have patterned pants for men and women. blouses, dresses, and so much more. My husband and I have match cycling jerseys that I drafted and built for our bike ride on the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska! I am so excited to continue to make more of these for our trip in the near future!!!

Now that I have some of these basic blocks I don’t have to start from scratch. I only have to save the base as a new project and begin my editing!!!! LOVE IT!!!! And if I ever want the first pattern I can either save it in paper form or reprint it out from my computer.
