Day 22
I love working with the LIlyPad Sewable Coin Battery and LED’s. It is so much fun to make small projects like a Light-up Santa Ornament to hang on the tree. This project is so simple and a great way to introduce kids to sewing and wearable electronics. Let get out materials and start sewing.
Gather your Materials
- Felt – Red, White, Skin
- Coin Battery Board LilyPad
- Sewable LED’s (X4) LilyPad
- Conductive thread
- Hand needles
- Fabric Glue
- Alligator Clip wires
Designing the Santa
I used Adobe Illustrator to create my pattern. I have attached the pattern I used below.
Making the Light-up Santa Ornament
Cutting the Pattern
Cut out all the pattern pieces. I used a water-soluble pen to trace the pattern and then cut each one out.
After cutting out all my pattern pieces, I laid them out how they would eventually be placed.
This will help me determine where I will be Adding the LED’s to. I thought it would be cute to have the cheeks light-up to simulate rosy cheeks. And I thought it would be fun to have a red and green LED in the ball of the hat.
Now that the placement is known, mark with the water-soluble pen each LED’s location to make sewing easier.
Sewing the LED’s onto the Santa
Next, I started by sewing the coin battery board in its location under the hat.
After knotting off the thread, don’t cut it but continue sewing to the first LED. Make sure that the positive is connected to the positive, and the negative is connected to the negative.
I chose to have the two cheek LED’s on one strand and the two LEDs in the hat on the other.
Once all the connections have been sewn, it is time to test out the circuit.
Attaching all the pieces
It is time to place all the pieces onto the base that the LEDs are sewn to. Begin with the face—Mark where you will be placing the face with the water-soluble pen. Glue around the edges of the face, and then using the guidelines marked, place it down.
Continue with the remainder of the pattern pieces. For some of the larger pieces, using a little more glue that only the edges would make it more secure.
Finally, you will need a way for the LIght-up Santa Ornament to be hung on the tree. There are many different ways that you can achieve this. I chose to create a small swing tack loop that a tree hook can hang from.
Now you have a Light-up Santa Ornament. Hang the ornament on your tree and enjoy!!!
